When conceptual artists such as Michael Asher and Daniel Buren focused their attention to take the museum itself as their subject, the concept of institutional critique was born. These artists paid particularly close attention to the institution's white walls, and their supposed neutrality. They emblazoned the white cube with its own measurements, printed galleries with stripes, ripped out gallery doors and tore walls down to their studs-all to highlight the highly charged nature and contested power of the institution. Fifty years later, the most contested site of an artwork's representation continues to be its physical site-the gallery, pop-up, museum, etc.-as well as its representation online.

Constant Dullaart's "Adverserial Protean" approaches the gallery-in this instance, the diminutive Probe, a gallery that is actually a 2x3 meter wood box, and represented only documentation online-with the histories of both institutional critique and the representation of art online. The images appear to show a "mise en abyme" of greyish purply and brown walls impossibly continually refracted without end. To create this effect, Dullaart took images of the exhibition space, printed them on vinyl, and adhered them to the gallery walls. Additionally, the artist strategically placed mirrored plinths and small objects throughout the exhibition space. Lastly, Dullaart took photographs of the installation from various angles, with the resulting images appearing like a life-size labyrinth or carefully composed Photoshopped collages. In reality, Dullaart didn't alter the documentation of the Probe space at all, and it is certainly not life-size-with walls only reaching 110cm high, it's rather miniature-sized, akin to an architectural model. Probe is thus not a space in itself, but located within the atelier of another artist, Suze May Sho, and takes up about a fourth of the studio.

The idea of a 2x3 meter gallery also lampoons the sanctity of the white cube in that it cannot be entered by humans, rendering it useless in most capacities traditionally associated with galleries. In the case of Dullaart's exhibition, the gallery space was only entered during installation, so the show will have no physical visitors-the exhibitions' visitation rather measured by page views. This prompted the artist to consider the space as a rendering of an institution as it only functions via its documentation and representation; thus, the space does represent reality, but rather a scaled-down version of reality. This gesture is similar to how we view a sketch in Photoshop or scale model and understanding it as real. Thus the artist was prompted to consider how a copy of an institutional white cube would look and function-perhaps as a stage or artificial environment, highlighting the artificiality of artistic presentation itself.

Active in the discourse surrounding internet art and new media for over a decade, Dullaart also took inspiration from now-defunct internet art galleries such as Chrystal Gallery, an entirely 3D-rendered gallery organized by artist Timur Si-Qin; Jst Chillin, organized by Caitlin Denny and Parker Ito; as well as the surf clubs Nasty Nets and Club Internet. These online exhibition platforms, and their operation between years 2006-2012, mark an idealistic period in which online galleries and surf clubs were thought of as a more ethical form of exhibition making, distinct from physical space galleries with their high overheads and subsequent market concerns. Coincidentally, 10 years later many of the artists associated with these online galleries have experienced market success and rarely make digital work anymore, or have stopped making artwork altogether. As the social scene represented by these online galleries and surf clubs became notably oversaturated with social competition, widespread disenchantment within this community caused the subsequent disbanding of many of these online exhibition projects.

In this light, Dullaart's "Adverserial Protean" takes on the meaning of a virtual echo chamber. The endless references of institutional critique-references to the self, the wall, the gallery, to other artists, etc.-are but one echo chamber. Another is the sociality of contemporary art as an industry; the close proximity and competitiveness of artists pit against each other: the demise of a certain band of internet artists. The title "Adverserial Protean" is itself two descriptors that modify nothing, mechanically similar to "great big" or "pretty beautiful." Like the form of exhibition made up only of its documentation, these two adjectives point to form without content. The exhibition, in this case, has made itself.
